I have had a package of scottie appliques for several years and never really had a project in mind for them, so I pulled a couple of red and green ones, fused them to a solid fabric, stitched them down and then blanket-stitched them to felt and voila...little scottie ornaments! </div>

OK, one last children's book quilt before I move on... For<i> Goodnight Moon</i> and <i>The Hungry Caterpillar</i>, I used only matching fabric the storybook's line. With <i>Green Eggs and Ham </i>I decided to make something a bit more creative and original. I cut up a panel and added borders to the pages with non-coordinating fabrics from my stash. I am also planning to add non-<i>Green Eggs and Ham </i>blocks to the design to break up the quilt top. My sister pointed out that I seem to gravitate towards greens, oranges, yellows and blues, and she is so right. The projects with these color combinations always seem to be my favorites. Next week, finished shots of the story book trilogy... </div>

I love, love, love these little <a href="http://seekatesew.com/boy-friday-robot-toy-bucket-tutorial/" target="_blank">fabric toy buckets</a> from <a href="http://seekatesew.com/" target="_blank">See Kate Sew</a>. I was on a roll and cut out the pieces for three bags and then ran out of interfacing and only had enough to finish one. This one has proven to be a huge success so far: it is big enough to hold my son's entire Cars collection but small enough for a three year old to carry around easily. The elastic top keeps the toys from falling out but remains open enough for easy access. He can easily grab it and carry it from room to room. Now, I must finish up the other two - his Planes collection needs a home too!</div>

You can't see in this picture but the lining is the blue crab fabric above. When the bag is sitting on a table flopping open a bit, you can really see the lining, so it's fun to have a cute fabric in there too.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished the bag in time for Halloween but didn't quite manage to post it in time... I was inspired by Monica's tutorial from <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/blog/?cat=44" target="_blank">The Happy Zombie</a> for <a href="http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/bags-pillows-gifts/bags-and-purses/small-treat-totes" target="_blank">small treat totes</a>. Although I followed her instructions for assembly, I made it about twice as wide, three inches (rather than two) deep and taller than wide. These little bags are so so fun and easy to make! I also interfaced the lining to give it a little more thickness. The smaller ones stand up just fine on their own. My son was delighted with his little bag, though still a bit too shy to actually trick or treat. He was content to carry the few pieces of candy I gave him around in his bag. </div>

In addition to Curious George, my son also loves The Hungry Caterpillar and Good Night Moon (and Green Eggs and Ham, but that's another post...). A situation to which I am sure many of you can relate, we have read these books countless times, over and over every day. He was so excited to see the fabrics arrive, and I plan to make two simple quilts for us to snuggle under as we read and re-read these and other favorites on the sofa. When we settle down to read books, the first thing he says is, "Mama, quilt!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj-m0DSH4JHiFLjAAO7eS-yZbXXL14-kaKlYwkmgzIVMzaTTNvoAZBVtxcQe-CvJEblcUJsb3fyHCgpOdygBKZfaiUej54BgaVD-VSWcE-vpLtMI9dcWQI41mccp3PiAfiyKdnPk3dwE/s1600/IMG_2880.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj-m0DSH4JHiFLjAAO7eS-yZbXXL14-kaKlYwkmgzIVMzaTTNvoAZBVtxcQe-CvJEblcUJsb3fyHCgpOdygBKZfaiUej54BgaVD-VSWcE-vpLtMI9dcWQI41mccp3PiAfiyKdnPk3dwE/s1600/IMG_2880.JPG" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered a panel and one yard of the food border fabric. As I only had a single yard of the border, I pieced together the fabric above and below the panel, matching up the plums and pie as carefully as I could.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4p3YYWoXOai_ZJeNh7hZubBGLmr5GFPFZspXSz13-FRKHXz9-zQiyd_b2xcGGBVMDD94CdlvB6oITmndh3lCooXp85my9_RbDxA45j1u9BtWzPedV36nHLbVSgu7iODdbpb0nBxMBfVo/s1600/IMG_2894.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4p3YYWoXOai_ZJeNh7hZubBGLmr5GFPFZspXSz13-FRKHXz9-zQiyd_b2xcGGBVMDD94CdlvB6oITmndh3lCooXp85my9_RbDxA45j1u9BtWzPedV36nHLbVSgu7iODdbpb0nBxMBfVo/s1600/IMG_2894.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For Good Night Moon, I added a few solid red, yellows and greens to a fat quarter bundle an cut 4.5" squares to assemble simple 12" 4x4 blocks. The center block is a single square of "patchwork" fabric.<br />

These two little baby quilts were made for my cousins who had little girls just a few months apart. The design is the same for both - simple 12" strip blocks - and they are both arranged in rainbow colors. However, except for one orange floral, no fabrics are used twice. Cutting 89 different fabrics probably took longer than actually piecing the top!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Elizabeth's quilt has more pinks and purples than Lillian's (two blocks of each) and a single block each of red, orange, yellow, green and blue.</div>

My mom stepped in and embroidered the names on both quilts. I was all set to do a simple back stitch, which is pretty much the limit of my embroidery skills, but she argued that a stem stitch would be nicer. She attempted to teach me, but honestly I just don't have the patience (or talent) for embroidery... </div>

Lillian's quilt has more red, orange and yellows. I am not sure if I have a favorite...my preference shifts back and forth...<br />

As usual, most of the fabrics are a mix of 30's repro and Japanese novelty characters.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Massive progress on the Curious George quilt! In the end, I was able to cut 32 Georges from the single <a href="http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/curious-george-sheeting/" target="_blank">Pottery Barn</a> pillowcase. I used 30 for the quilt top with two left over for a pair of pillows. I used red, yellow, blue and green Kona solids to make the log cabin blocks. I just randomly cut the fabric bands without measuring and strip-pieced them trimming each side as I went along. When they were all assembled, I simply squared them all up with a 12.5" ruler. Initially I regretted not making some of the first rounds of the log cabin thinner so that the outer edgers would have finished thicker, (some are very thin!) but once all of the blocks were sewn together, I found that I actually enjoy the varied width of the strips, as they break up the monotony of all the solids. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It took me a couple of hours to settle on a layout, as I wanted to avoid the the same colors touching each other and I didn't want repeat centers too close to one another. Literally a giant puzzle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTKZK85dVAFM9vOvU_4APxEon5MlhVA6HxU6e3C5BUv6JcB7jDmoaiquz8U9VWpOP9tiO6RbepVYax8_iyrE_z29VX7p1vnvE_j_fepfUmRR4yO3xAnBDi6-L4ijzwnPA91WS29sQa5A/s1600/IMG_2069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTKZK85dVAFM9vOvU_4APxEon5MlhVA6HxU6e3C5BUv6JcB7jDmoaiquz8U9VWpOP9tiO6RbepVYax8_iyrE_z29VX7p1vnvE_j_fepfUmRR4yO3xAnBDi6-L4ijzwnPA91WS29sQa5A/s1600/IMG_2069.JPG" height="558" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the back I made three identical blocks, using the solids to make a four patch bordered with the other Curious George print, and I back-stitched a simple label under the center block.<br />

A little bonus pair of slippers I started, but have not quite made myself finish the binding. I need to find a solution to the slippery bottoms (little dots of silicone?) and also the opening for the foot needs to be a bit bigger to accommodate my son's chubby feet. He does seem to enjoy trying to stuff his feet in them and shuffle around, but I need to tweak the pattern and try again...<br />

In France the <i>carnet de santé</i> is a very important document. It holds all of your medical records from birth to adulthood. You are given your child's booklet in the hospital just after delivery and are expected to bring it to every doctor's appointment throughout their childhood. It contains birth stats, height/weight charts, vaccine records, any tests/exams/surgeries preformed on your child and a brief summary of each consultation. Something you DO NOT want to loose! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, it's a boring, plain, plastic government book. At the hospital, mine came with a green cloth slipcover advertising a brand of formula. So I used the original cover as a sort of template and made a new one much more my style! It ended up being a little more fiddly than I anticipated with all the different parts to assemble, but I am so pleased with the results - and I learned how to add snaps in the process! I interfaced the inside flaps to add some bulk and added the inside pockets to hold notes & prescriptions. The front and back are two log cabin blocks sewn together up the spine. I quilted on either side of the seams and then embroidered Louis' name on the front. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not sure how many years I have until he is embarrassed by the cover, but I will enjoy it until then...</div>

This is the other half of a <a href="http://www.patchworkinparis.com/2013/11/union-jack-pillow.html" target="_blank">pair</a> of Union Jack pillows I made for my best friend in 2012. Intimidated by the invisible zipper, I never finished the pillows. My mom sewed the zipper in the first pillow when I was home for Christmas 2012, but then we never found the time to finish the second one. So I gifted just the one pillow last Christmas, and my mom finished off the second pillow sometime last year after I left. So finally, one year later, my friend now has a complete pair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As with the first pillow, I used Busy Bee Quilt Designs <a href="http://www.mkquiltdesigns.com/pattern%20pages/p-victorygarden.html" target="_blank">Victory Garden</a> pattern. Both pillows share a small red border and solid red backing. I totally love the Japanese cotton/linen London print. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lesson learned : speedy finishes = envelope closures and not zippers!</div>

</div>
I am really excited to start cutting a Curious George quilt for Louis. I unpicked a Pottery Barn Curious George pillowcase and plan to salvage as many Georges as possible.. I also have another George print with zoo animals but only a half a yard. I want to use only these two prints with solid red, yellow, blue, green and white. I have a few ideas but nothing too specific... Somehow I want to frame the various-sized Georges with the solids and add a splash of the zoo animal print somewhere...maybe the back?<br />
<br />
I need to get cracking... Louis is in the middle of a total Curious George obsession, but it won't last forever...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The crocodile is a bonus addition, as Louis is also currently obsessed with Lyle the Crocodile and identifies "Lala" with all crocs!<br />

I have been hoarding a small collection of Yuwa French pastry fabric in various colors for a couple of years with plans to make oven mitts for friends and family. This first one was a Christmas present for my best friend in Texas - she loves to bake, so hopefully it will come in handy! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The sugar-sweet pinkness is really neither of our styles, but after debating a more subdued color for the binding, I couldn't resist the fun pop of pink. The main fabric with the patisserie recipes is a cotton/linen blend, and the cakes are on a lovely, smooth cotton. Like my previous mitts, I quilted the pockets and main panel with parallel 45° lines. This time however, I added two layers of batting and one layer of <a href="http://www.warmcompany.com/ibpage.html" target="_blank">Insul-Bright</a> rather than only one layer of batting with the Insul-Bright. I cut all of the pieces, including the batting, a little big and then trim to size and round the corners with a plate after quilting to accommodate for any shifting between the five bulky layers. Then I zig-zag around the edges of the pockets and main panel to crimp the layers and allow for the binding to be sewn on easier and neater.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More mitts to come in other colors... </div>

This little t-shirt came together quickly after a dig through my scraps. I looked at tons of online tutorials for ideas. In the end, I used the turkey body template from <a href="http://www.shybydesign.com/2012/10/12/freebie-friday-2-turkey-applique-template-link-party/" target="_blank">SHYby DESIGN</a> (slightly enlarged) but went with rounded feathers. I really wanted to use the bright orange t-shirt but also wanted orange and red feathers, so decided to add the inner row of feathers in the darker colors so they wouldn't blend into the t-shirt and then use the lighter greens and yellows against the orange shirt. I just ironed the shapes on with some Heavy Duty Wonder Under and haven't bothered sewing the applique down. I imagine it would last longer if I did, but I don't think he will wear the top enough for it to matter... </div>

A sewing machine cover has been on my to do list for quite some time, and now that my son is tall enough for his wandering fingers to reach the sewing machine's fun knobs and buttons, it has become a priority! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My machine sits out in the living room on a table, so a recent redecoration dictated the color scheme. Orange has replaced red as the main accent color in the room, so orange it is!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was inspired by the vertical strips on <a href="http://www.iheartlinen.typepad.com/i_heart_linen/2009/05/so-here-it-is-my-friends-my-darling-book-its-available-for-pre-sale-onamazon-faintsi-love-patchwork-25-irresistable-zak.html" target="_blank">Rashida Coleman-Hale's</a> sewing machine cover in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159668142X?ie=UTF8&tag=iheartlinen-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=159668142X" target="_blank">I Love Patchwork</a>. I have added a few more columns of color and of varying widths, and rather than the grommet and tie closure she uses, I am planning to add sides and make it more like a closed box - just as soon as I figure out how to attach the side panels... </div>

Baby quilts are so satisfying! Big enough to feel like a quilt, yet small enough to finish quickly without turning into a year-long work in progress. You can either keep the design simple for a fun gift, or take advantage of the small size to experiment with a more intricate or complex block without having to commit to full-sized project. I found this size to be so handy when Louis was a baby - perfect for a stroller or on the floor for tummy time or as a play mat. <br />
<br />
This quilt was made for a friend of my sister who was planning a purple nursery for her little girl. Purple is SO not my color. I have huge overflowing boxes of fabric - each dedicated to a single color, but my purple stash occupies a small corner of the green box. Lucky for me, my sister never misses an opportunity to shop for fabric (and is way more into purple than I), and a fabulous package of purple finds was soon on its way to Paris!<br />
<br />
For the stars I used the <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/06/tutorial-july-star-blocks.html" target="_blank">star block tutorial</a> over at Cluck, Cluck Sew, which I have used in the past. I just increased the dimensions to make 12" finished blocks. I quilted on either side of the seams of the nine blocks and then diagonally, horizontally and vertically through the center of the stars. The back is a single, over-sized log cabin with a 4-patch center. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been admiring Amy Smart's <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2012/07/finished-union-jack-quilt.html" target="_blank">Union Jack quilt</a> at <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/" target="_blank">Diary of a Quilter</a> for some time. I followed the progress of her blocks and am totally infatuated with the finished quilt. One day, I would love to tackle an entire quilt of Union Jacks, but in the meantime, I decided to start smaller with a couple of pillows for my best friend back in Texas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like Amy, I used the <a href="http://www.mkquiltdesigns.com/pattern%20pages/p-victorygarden.html" target="_blank">Victory Garden</a> pattern by <a href="http://www.mkquiltdesigns.com/index.html" target="_blank">Busy Bee Quilt Designs</a>. I added a couple of borders and quilted it with straight lines. For a more polished finish, I wanted to attempt an invisible zipper rather than my usual envelope back, so I asked my experienced mom for help. She did a beautiful job, though I am not sure this quite overcame my fear of the invisible zipper...I am still much more comfortable with the trusty envelope closure! </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I couldn't find any fun Easter themed shirts around here for Louis, so I decided to raid my fabric stash and make something myself. I fused a rabbit silhouette onto a tee-shirt and sewed on a pompom for the tail. To finish off the edges, I consulted a few online tutorials to figure out how to do a blanket stitch, (easier than I feared!) and, voila! a finished top. So quick and easy - I definitely see more holiday themed tops in Louis' future...</div>

I had so much fun making it last summer in preparation for Louis' birth, and this summer he has been enjoying playing on it now that he can sit up on his own.<br />

This little string quilt is another project I finished in December but never found the time to photograph. As Louis was born in December, I wanted a stroller quilt to keep him warm during our walks outside. I took it with me to the hospital when he was born, and he has used it almost every day since then. It has turned out to be such a handy size. Small and easy to carry around, and just the right size to cover him up snugly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I mostly used scraps from my <span style="color: #20124d;"><span style="color: #20124d;"><a href="http://www.patchworkinparis.com/2011/04/pickledish-pillow.html" target="_blank">pickledish pillow</a>,</span> s</span>o the top came together quickly. I used the excellent tutorial over at<span style="color: #20124d;"> <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/2009/04/27/a-string-quilt-block-tutorial-paper-pieced-method/" target="_blank">Film in the Fridge</a></span> to paper-piece the blocks and then machine-quilted straight and diagonal lines through the squares and ran lines of hand quilting through the white lines. </div>

In my first major burst of quilting energy since Louis, I finished up the top and backing of my Blockheadz bee quilt. As a couple of blocks were unfortunately lost in the mail and a couple never sent back, I had four blocks to finish up in order to complete the top. Also, I decided to add borders to each of the 16 blocks. I have ambitious plans to hand quilt around each of the stars and through the center square. Hopefully I will make some progress over this last week of holidays before going back to work....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are so many different fabrics, colors and styles, but somehow I feel the blocks work together despite the business. I really love the hedgie blocks.</div>

I haven't posted in months and months and my unfinished stack of quilts continues to taunt me daily, but I just haven't found the time or energy to tackle it quite yet. I am determined to somehow stay awake long enough after Louis goes to bed and after we have managed to eat dinner to finish up the star quilt I started for him before he was born. I have (had) elaborate plans of hand quilting most of it, and could potentially make some progress over the holidays in August if I could assemble the blocks and back before then...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did manage to finish this sewing goat quilt just before he was born in December but then never got around to photographing it and posting the final results. I just love the color combinations of green, orange blue and yellow. I've included several different colors of <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/essex/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #073763;">Robert Kaufman Essex linen</span></a> throughout the top and the back in an effort to tone down the mix of colors and patterns a bit. </div>

As soon as I saw that Robert Kaufman was releasing a <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/how_the_grinch_stole_christmas_complete_collection/"><span style="color: #134f5c;">How the Grinch Stole Christmas</span></a> fabric line, I immediately pre-ordered a fat quarter bundle and some yardage, knowing that it would make the perfect wedding quilt for a close friend. I know that a Christmas-themed quilt for a wedding (especially one in May) seems rather odd, but my friend adores Christmas movies, and the Grinch is firmly at the top of her list of favorites. The fabric wasn't released until just after her wedding, so the present was a few months late -though judging from her delight when opening it, I don't think she minded! <br />
<br />
The design is pretty simple - I used nine of the images from the panel and framed each with red and green yardage from the collection and then joined it all together with 3.5" squares. <br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
At last I have a new finished quilt to share! </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I started this one secretly back in March as a surprise for my mom's birthday in August, working on it on and off to finish in time. I used a jelly roll of Pampered Pooch by Chloe's Closet for Moda for the front and yardage for the borders and backing. The pattern is from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Scrap-Basket-Surprises-Quilts-Strips-Patchwork/dp/1564778908/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319540360&sr=8-1"><span style="color: #134f5c;">Scrap-Basket Surprises</span> </a>by Kim Brackett, though I added the triple border. I love 30's reproduction fabrics, and my mom loves Scotties, so this was an obvious fabric choice. I especially like the splashes of red throughout the top, which I feel break up the pastels making it less sugary sweet .</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
My husband kindly photographed the quilt at our favorite spot in the botanical gardens near our apartment before I packed it up and sent it off to my mom.</div>

<br />
I sort of made the back up as I went along...<br />
Initially, I found a Scottie block almost identical to <a href="http://quilting.about.com/od/blockofthemonth/ss/scotty_dog.htm"><span style="color: #134f5c;">this one</span></a> this one somewhere, but it didn't include any measurements or instructions, so I just guessed at the proportions and created a somewhat giant Scottie for the center. Then I saw the <a href="http://jellyrolls2go.com/pampered-pooch-quilt-pattern.html"><span style="color: #134f5c;">Pampered Pooch quilt pattern</span></a> using super cute bones in one of the borders. Again, I didn't have the pattern or any guidelines, so I just improvised. <br />
